DWAYNE BARKER

PERRY HILLTOP CITIZENS COUNCIL

Board President of Perry Hilltop Citizens Council, Dwayne Barker was raised and resides on the Northside. A bulk of those years were spent living with the late Karen L. Barker. Growing up, Barkers mother taught him the value of family, education and community. He feels blessed to have the ability to walk the streets of his community Perry Hilltop with his head high knowing that he is continuing his mother’s legacy.

Barker would often question his mission in life. As a young man with the dream of becoming a professional football player in the NFL, like all young men who played on the Peewee football teams as well as the high school players. His dream was short-lived because he did not have the right attitude or the grades to move on to the next level. He stated, “I failed so that I can be the voice, face and leader that these young men and women can see in a positive light in our community.”

Before COVID-19, Barker spent much of his time leading volunteer efforts with parents and community members at Pittsburgh King and guided community engagement at other Pittsburgh Public Schools. Now, his time is spent figuring out “what next” as community outreach manager of the Pittsburgh Project

“In this new role, it's my responsibility and passion to bring back the greatness that once was the Pittsburgh Project with the help of great partnerships,” Barker said.
